Stella Young – “I’m not your inspiration, thank you very much”

Our second blog post was going to be about why Dean and I decided to start an independent business teaching O&M and travel training skills. However, I came across this great TED talk from the¬†wonderful comedian and journalist Stella Young – “I’m not your inspiration, thank you very much”.

Stella talks about how people with disabilities are viewed as ‘inspirational’ for doing things that actually aren’t particularly extraordinary. As Stella says, she wants to “live in a world where we don’t have such low expectations of disabled people that we are congratulated for getting out of bed and remembering our own name”. This sums up our philosophy at Independent Options for Mobility beautifully. Disability is not about the specific impairment, but rather how society is structured (or not) to be accessible and open to all.
